Regional Programme Midland

by THALBEN-BALL From ST. MARK'S, NORTH AUDLEY STREET
In his early years Elgar held the post of organist, succeeding his father, at St. George's Church, Worcester. He has not, however, written anything of importance for the organ beyond this Sonata. It was composed, as many of Elgar's works have been, for an occasion— the visit of some American musicians to Worcester Cathedral in July, 1898. The Sonata is admittedly difficult, but original and effective, and reflects the period in which it was written-somewhere between caraetacus and the ' Enigma' Variations.
