THE WIRELESS MILITARY BAND

Regional Programme Midland

Conductor, B. WALTON O'DONNELL
ROBERT EASTON (Bass)
FÉLIClEN DAVID had had, at the age of 23, a fairly complete musical education at the Paris Conservatoire in the days when Cherubini, a very able director, in spite of what Berlioz says about him, was head of it. In 1833, therefore, when David went for several years to the East-Turkey, Egypt, and Palestine-he was ready to receive impressions. These he put to good use, and he had soon prepared for publication a collection of Melodies Orientates. These charming and exquisite pieces met, however, with little success, but that did not deter David from recording his Eastern impressions in almost everything he composed to the end of his days. Inevitably he set Moore's Lalla Rookh , a picture of the East after his own heart, and it was the most successful of his operas. His other notable works are Le Disert and La Perle du Brésil, the overture of which is now to be performed.
