MARGARET ELWES (Soprano)
SOLOMON (Pianoforte)
MARGARET ELWES is the daughter of that very distinguished singer, Gervase Elwes , whose tragic death at the age of fifty-five was a loss deeply felt, not only by his host of friends but by the whole of the British musical public. The esteem in which Elwes was held was du& as much to his personal qualities as to the sensitive temperament which made him so fine an interpreter of Oratorio and Lieder. He was a great Bach singer and was particularly fond of Brahms, and he is par...ticularly remembered for his beautiful rendering of the tenor part in Elgar's Dream of Gerontius, a work with which ho was most deeply in sympathy. There is no doubt that he had a remarkable influence on the higher cultivation of refined and intelligent singing in this country, and by close attention to diction and interpretation he lifted the art of singing on to a far higher plane than it had ever reached before. Visitors to Queen's Hall will have noted that a bust has been placed in a niche at the back of the Grand Circle, to commemorate his memory, and a Gervase Elwes Memorial Fund was founded not long ago with the object of assisting young musicians. Miss Elwes carries on a fine tradition.
SOLOMON has already held his position among the world's foremost pianists long enough to make us forget both how young he still is and what an amazing child prodigy he was. He 'was only eight when he made his first important appearance, playing that big and difficult work, the Tchaikovsky Pianoforte Concerto, with the Queen's Hall Orchestra in London in a way which many a mature artist might well have envied. That was in 1911, and since then he has played whereever good music is made. But, though the whole world admires him and his playing, he can always count on a specially warm welcome from London, his native city. It must be as real a pleasure to himself to play to his own people as it is a source of pride to Londoners to claim him as a fellow citizen.
