The project to import methane-the waste gas from overseas oilfields-has recently been brought to fruition as the result of researches in several fields of science, including metallurgy. Dr. West describes some of the work that had to be carried out to find a metal that could be safely used at the temperature of liquid methane-a hundred-and-fifty-six degrees below freezing point Centigrade.
