GORDON WALKER (flute); Nicolas ROTH (violin) ; ANTHONY COLLINS (viola) ;
THE LYRA QUARTET is a unique chamber music combination consisting as it does of flute, violin, viola and harp. all of which instruments are played by distinguished artists. Gordon Walker , the founder of the Quartet, is principal flute of the London Orchestra, and was for ten years principal flute at Covent Garden. He has appeared as soloist in Mozart Concertos at the ' Proms ', and also with the world-famous singers, Selma Kurtz , Lilly Pons and Toti dal Monte. The violinist, Nicolas Roth , is well known both in England and on the Continent as a soloist and leader of the Budapest Trio. Anthony Collins is principal viola of the London Symphony Orchestra and a composer of some distinction having written, among other works, two quartets for the Lyra Quartet. It is interesting to note that both Vaughan Williams and Arnold Bax have promised to write special works for the Lyra
Quartet in the near future. The harpist, John Cockerill , is one of the finest players of his instrument in the country, and is principal harpist of the London Symphony Orchestra.
The chief aim of the Lyra Quartet is the providing of first-rate performances of neglected music written for unusual combinations of instruments. These range from duets to trios and quartets, such as Handel's Passacaglia for violin and viola, Beethoven's Serenade for flute, violin and viola, Goossen's Trio for flute, violin and harp, and Rameau's Suite for flute, violin, viola and harp.
In the case of the quartets, such as the Rameau Suite and Teleman's Quartet in E minor, which was originally written for flute, violin, viol de gamba and harpsichord, most of them have been specially adapted by Anthony Collins and John Cockerill.

An appeal on behalf of THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR THE DEAF, by Lord
THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR THE DEAF has, within the ten years of its activities, established itself as an indispensable centre to which the deaf everywhere can look for advice and help in their difficulties.
Deafness is tragic in its incidence and effects, and none are immune from it. It is said that 13,000,000 persons in Britain are more or less deaf. The vicious circle is often complete— silence, isolation, unemployment, and want.
The services of the Institute are available to every sufferer and very large numbers seek its advice and help. The Institute maintains two homes, accommodating some sixty women, a Hostel for twenty homeless boys, and a centre for training in lip reading. It now has special need for funds to establish itself in a home for administrative purposes, meetings, and classes.
Life for the deaf in a world made for and ordered by those who hear must, in any case, be hard ; but the Institute for which Lord Charnwood is appealing is doing much to make it easier for large numbers whose lives are more or less completely silent.
