' The Art of Reading '

National Programme London

Mr. DESMOND MAcCARTHY : 'Drama, Modern :
Ibsen and After '
Tonight Mr. MacCarthy brings to a close his series on ' The Art of Reading,' in the course of which he has ranged over the whole field of English literature, bringing many famous books before a host of new readers. The modern revival of drama within the last fifty years has meant, on the dramatists' side, an influx of new ideas to the stage. Ibsen, Wilde, Pinero, Shaw, Henry Arthur Jones , Galsworthy, Maugham, Coward and Lonsdale have all excited attention for their work for the stage because it treated, seriously or satirically, of the life of our time. This fact has led to a great increase in the reading of plays. Mr. MacCarthy is a distinguished dramatic critic, and well qualified to consider modern drama from the reader's as well as the spectator's point of view. This final talk leads naturally into the series that begins next week on ' The Making of a Play,' in which Macbeth is considered from the point of view of producer, actor and designer.
Nothing could better emphasize the many-sided artistic activity and collaboration, which is the outstanding feature of the modern dramatic renaissance of which Mr. MacCarthy speaks.
