SCHUBERT SONGS sung by JOHN ARMSTRONG (Tenor)
Der Flug der Zeit (The Flight of Time) Auf der Donau (On the Danube)
Das Rosenband (The Pink Ribbon)
Hanflings Liebeswerbung (Wooing of the Linnet) Vor meiner Wioge (Before my Cradle) Der Schmetterling (The Butterfly) Stimme der Liebe (Voice of Love)
Schubert wrote more than six hundred songs in fifteen years. That is at the rate of one nearly every week of his short adult life-if he can be said ever to have become adult in the sense of leaving his boyhood behind him. He wrote songs because ho could not help it. They poured from him as easily as from a child singing at his play; and whether we regard genius as an accident or a divine dispensation, nothing of that can affect the boyish sincerity, the spring-like adolescence that colour all his songs, whatever the mood or the matter of his inspiration. A less sophisticated composer never breathed ; a more sensitive poet never sang. His genius was that of a giant, his spirit that of a boy, and almost as a child he lived and died.
