Field-Marshal Sir William Robertson, G.C.B., G.C.M.G., G.C.V.O.

Sir William Robertson is the first soldier in the history of the British Army to have climbed from the bottom to the top of the military ladder: from private to field marshal is a literal summary of his career. He served in the ranks in India from the age of seventeen and received his first commission when he was twenty-eight. He was on the Headquarters Staff in the South African War, and in the years before 1914 Head of the Foreign Intelligence Section at the War Office, and Chief of the General Staff at Aldershot, and in the Great War he was for three years Chief of the Imperial Staff and Commander-in-Chief of the Eastern Command in 1918. His career reached its peak in 1920 with his appointment as Field Marshal.
France, Belgium, Italy, Serbia, China, Japan and America have conferred honours and decorations upon Sir William Robertson, but he has confessed that the achievement of his first rung, promotion to Lance-Corporal in 1878, gave him more satisfaction than any of his later triumphs.

Now that the summer holidays are having the effect of temporarily disbanding the B.B.C. Symphony Orchestra, the B.B.C. Theatre Orchestra is doing all the work. Therefore it is entitled to all the applause, though it stands as much chance of getting that as do junior partners and younger brothers in like circumstances. For when the members of the Symphony Orchestra return, as they soon will, and the Promenades begin, the Theatre Orchestra will go quietly back to its job without even taking a curtain call.
The B.B.C. Theatre Orchestra is a body of twenty-four picked players, with Leslie Woodgate as permanent conductor and S. Kneale Kelley leading. Its name does not imply that it plays in a theatre. In fact, it differs from the average theatre band in a number of ways. It does not, for example, countenance the deputy system, and it does rehearse constantly; it does not lightly suffer the indignity of serving as a background to the chatter of an audience, and it does play invariably to a crowded and attentive 'house.' In fact, it is the kind of orchestra theatre managers dream about and try vainly to secure.
It was formed not very long ago for the definite purpose of relieving the Symphony Orchestra from having constantly to adapt itself to two moods, that belonging to the concert hall, and that belonging only to the theatre - two very different qualities. Not that either combination is incapable of taking the other's place. They can, and do if necessary, as on the present occasion. But there is great deal of incidental and the lighter kind of music wanted for such items in the programmes as plays, vaudeville, sketches, and the like, and it is for this that the Theatre Orchestra is always available. This evening, however, and for several evenings within the next few weeks, the Theatre Orchestra will entertain listeners with all the circumstance, though with little of the pomp, of the Symphony Orchestra. 'Guest' conductors will be invited to direct it, Dr. Boult, who has not before conducted the Theatre Orchestra, being the first of the ' guests.'
