The 149th Renewal of THE DERBY STAKES

Relayed from Epsom RACE COURSE
MR. LYLE'S running commentary on the Derby will be relayed from the Grand Stand on the course on Epsom Downs. The course, as tho plan on this page shows, follows a rough horseshoe formation, inclining downhill at tho start and uphill at the finish. Since the shortening of Tattenham Corner, the sharp, critical last bend before the final straight, the course measures exactly one mile, four furlongs. The record for the new course is held by Call Boy , who covered it in two minutes, thirty-four and two-fifth seconds in the 1927 race, a fifth of a second faster than Captain Cuttle in 1922. The Derby Stakes were first contested in 1780. and are now worth about £6,000.

SAINT-SAËNS, seriously as he took his art, was in his relaxed moments far more the schoolboy than the sage. He had a lively but not a very subtle wit, and he could be caustic without exceeding the limits of kindliness. This work is a piece of fun, a parody, a genial satire, and has, or had, implications hidden in the music. For a long time Saint-Saëns would not allow it al; to he published, though he released from the suite for general use that graceful, charming little piece The Swan. Many of the numbers are supposed to reflect the idiosyncrasies of some of his friends and associates, others to burlesque musical conventions : but with all that we need not worry. It will be enough to listen to the suite as the jolly kind of music that one would expect from little sound pictures of birds, animals, domestic fowl, and ' pianists.'

A version for broadcasting by E. J. King Bull of the famous story by Henry James.
The famous story by the Anglo-American writer, Henry James, on which this play is based, is perhaps the greatest psychological thriller written by a man of genius, certainly outstanding in its power to terrify by suggestion. It tells of the gradual haunting of two beautiful children by malignant spirits, and of the struggle waged for their souls by a loving governess. There is little action, but the mounting excitement of the struggle is conveyed in writing of great subtlety and beauty, heightened in this broadcast version by the music faded in and out above the dialogue to denote the interplay of the supernatural apparitions and the lives of the characters. Lilian Harrison, whose performance in 'Jane Eyre' will be remembered, has the leading part.
