THE world-touring dance band is by no means an innovation of this century.
The idea is at least a hundred years old, and began practically with Johann Strauss , the elder, who, in 1826, formed a band of fourteen, and played, among other pieces, his opus one, a waltz, in a Viennese inn during the Carnival. His fame and the fame of his band soon spread to the ends of Europe, and the way was open to others to do the same.
Joseph Gung 'l, a Hungarian, was one of them.
He rose to be bandmaster in an Austrian regiment and at first made concert tours with the band, but, later, scenting a greater personal profit, he formed his own band, toured with it and captured the applause, first of one continent, and then, going to America, the applause of another. He was almost as popular as the Strausses, and much more travelled. He wrote, too, nearly as many waltzes. His dance music is melodious, almost tyrannously rhythmic, and of great charm.
SPANISH dance tunes and rhythms have always attracted French and one or two
Russian composers, as the Spanish Rhapsodies, Caprices and Suites written by them clearly show. Ravel, in particular,is a Spanish ' fan.' His opera, L'Heure Espagnole, the Bolero, this Habanera and the Pavane pour uneInfante defvnte seem to prove it. The Spanish idiom is a very distinctive one, and with the possible exception of that of tho Hungarian gipsies, the most vigorously alivo of any in Europe.

JOSEPH JOACHIM RAFF was a pupil of Liszt, and was regarded as a musician of importance in the middle of last century. Ho held high positions, inspired public admiration for his very numerous compositions, and died in 1882. His reputation and the public's esteem died almost at the same time, and Raff is remembered now by one or two engaging little pieces like the ' Cavatina,' and this one, ' La Fileuse.'
