From THE PAVILION, BOURNEMOUTH
(Conducted by THE COMPOSER)
(Voice, REG. ATTRIDGE)
HERBERT BEDFORD is nothing if not versatile; a composer of distinction, he is also an author who has several times had things, to say which were well worth telling, and, among other accomplishments, he is a successful miniature painter. A former composition student of the Guildhall School of Music, ho is now one of its Fellows, and in that, as in many other ways, is an influential figure in the English world of music. His own ranges over many scenes, from the England of Spenser, Shakespeare, and Marlowe to the mysterious East; his Night Piece, The Shepherd, for instance, which won a Carnegie award, is a true English pastoral of a delicate beauty, and his setting of the love scene from Romeo and Juliet, produced at a Norwich Festival, is no less successful Shakespeare music. But this Chinese Suite is by no means the first of his pieces to capture the elusive charm and bizarre colours of the Orient.
