These three scenes tell how the Lady Rosalind, banished from Court, came disguised as a youth to the Forest of Arden, and how she there became involved in an Arcadian romance. In the opening scene, imagine a terraced walk in the Palace garden, where the two cousins, Rosalind and Celia, pace in intimate talk.

Here is the story of how Bassanio and Gratiano came to Belmont a- wooing, how they won their brides, and how the fatal gift of two rings caused their first lovers' quarrel. The first scene shows us Portia, the lady of Belmont, discussing with her maid Nerissa the merits of her various suitors.

A tramp, old, down and out and unknown, has returned to his birthplace, a growing town in Yorkshire. He is threatened with arrest and is explaining to the policeman how, many years ago. he first got into trouble in helping a Scottish pal to get away to America. An American millionaire, of Scottish descent, appears on the scene.
