Dr. Dale took Mr. Phillips's clock to be repaired and discovered it was worth three hundred pounds. Mrs. Dale took Tarina to her school. Isobel Fielding cut her holiday short and flew back from Italy because of a frantic letter from Elsie Freeman, who accused the Dales of interfering and influencing Edward Fielding against her. Isobel quarrelled violently with Mrs. Dale because of this. Frederick William and Sidney told Joanna that they were unhappy with Auntie and wanted to come and live with her, after she had married Ivor Mitchell; Joanna was much distressed because of this, and after Mrs. Mitchell had told her that such an arrangement was impossible she disappeared from Parkwood Hill, two days before the wedding, leaving a note for Ivor.
