4: Reminders of the Venerable Bede
The civilisation which flourished in Northumbria during the eighth century has left a remarkable literature. Its most memorable achievement is Bede's History. Now ROSEMARY CRAMP—excavating on the sites of the monasteries at Monkwearmouth and Jarrow where Bede worked and wrote—has found exciting traces of the architecture of this period. She describes her discoveries and CHARLES Thomas talks about other evidence of early Christianity in Northumbria.
