Margaret's brother Frederick arrived secretly from exile the day before their mother died. But despite precautions he was in danger: Leonards, a drunken rogue in Milton, knew he had led a mutiny and still had a price on his head. Frederick got away, after a struggle in which Leonards fell. but the man died in hospital and Margaret has been named as a witness.
