Produced by Audrey Cameron CHAPTER 12
Chapter 11 described Irving's production of Macbeth. The Lyceum declined after Irving sold his rights in it to a company, and Ellen's last triumph there was in Cymbeline. In 1902 Ellen left the Lyceum to appear in The Merry Wives of Windsor at His Majesty's, under the management of Herbert Beerbohm Tree. She later decided to take a theatre and produce plays in conjunction with her son, Gordon Craig.

Reconstructions of famous trials with postscripts by Dudley Perkins
4: Whistler v. Ruskin
Libel: Westminster Hall
November 1878 with Bernard Braden
John Ruskin was the leading art critic of his day. Whistler was a painter who, in the effort to develop the techniques of painting and re-assert the importance of the individual vision of the painter, clashed frequently with established canons. The climax came when Ruskin loosed a broadside which attempted not merely to shatter Whistler's artistic principles but to destroy any idea that they were honestly held. Whistler's libel action, characteristic of the man, was at once courageous and self-seeking.
