Cricket: Warwickshire India

BBC Home Service Midland

by Colin Free
Harmonica themes played by Bruce Skurray
Produced by Ivan Smith for the Australian Broadcasting Commission
(ABC recording)
'End of the Road to Nowhere' is an impression of an Australian ghost town. Towns such as this are not uncommon in Australia. They are the result of the rapid exhaustion of gold or coal deposits, or the replacement of river traffic by a railway. This particular ghost town is a mining one in New South Wales. When the last mine closes, some of the inhabitants leave for Sydney, others turn to new livelihoods, with little success. The hotel keeper closes his shutters, the hardware merchant piles his stock on to a dray and leaves his shop exactly as it stands. The town is finally abandoned, to insects-and ghosts.
