by Lance Sieveking
To many people C.K. Ogden, who died last March, is known only as the originator of Basic English, the international language the copyright of which was bought by the Government in 1947. In fact he was astonishingly many-sided. He was an inventor, a reformer, a man of immense erudition and unforgettable wit. Lance Sieveking first met him at Cambridge in 1919 and their friendship continued until his death.
