Alan Rawsthorne 's ' Symphonic Stud es ' was his first large-scale work : produced at the I.S.C.M. Festival in Warsaw in 1939, it established his reputation as a composer of the first rank. The work. which is dedicated to John Ireland, consists of a continuous series of five variations on the thematic figure B-E-C sharp, set forth in a brief maestoso introduction. The variations are marked Allegro di bravura, Maestoso, Allegro Ji bravura, Lento, and Allegro piacevole.
