(piano)
Prokofiev, who was himself a brilliant pianist, wrote a great deal of piano music, including eight sonatas. No. 2 dates from 1912, when he was twenty-one and still a student at the St. Petersburg Conservatoire. Its four movements exhibit the ' Puckishness ' of Prokofiev's musical personality, though a vein of tender lyricism is also revealed, more particularly in the third, the slow movement. The lively finale, which opens like a tarantella, contains a reminiscence of the expressive second subject of the first movement. Harold Rutland

As a result of ill-judged and high-handed action a white official had been mobbed by a group of Gilbertese. The rule of law must be upheld but the action of the official could hardly be justified. What punishment was to be exacted and how could honour be satisfied and justice done?
