BBC Scottish Orchestra
(Leader, J. Mouland Begbie )
Conductor, Ian Whyte
Beethoven's Second Symphony is an altogether bigger, more splendid work than the Symphony in C that preceded it. Both the introduction and the slow movement are in tact more spacious and elaborate than those of any earlier symphony. In the Scherzo a brief phrase is tossed from one instrument to another in the happiest fashion; in the finale an abrupt and mischievous humour finds unforgettable expression. Yet the work, with its generally rather forma) cut, clearly looks to Haydn and Mozart as its progenitors.
