' The Celestial Felon,' by Jack Shepherd. Read by Mollie Austin followed by Walks in the West Country
8-Isle of Wight
From Ryde to Sandown with Peter Bale
Starting from Ryde, one of the three ferry terminals on the island, Peter Bale walks along the coast to Nettlestone Point at the north-east corner and then southwards to St. Helen's and the reclaimed land that used to be Brading Harbour, a great smugglers' resort in the past. The town, which is very ancient, was once of great importance with a Mayor and two Members of Parliament, but nowadays life there is quiet, though Brading's young people have a great musical reputation. The sea is an important part of this programme, for two thousand years ago the Romans sailed across the Channel to the island, and today the Solent is a famous yachting centre. From Brading, Peter Bale goes up over the hill past Yaverland Manor and finishes his walk at Sandown Bay.
