In last week's episode Colonel Esmond has decided at last to declare his love for Beatrix, the daughter of his cousin and protectress, Rachel, Viscountess Castlewood. He resolves to speak after the great reception given in his honour by his stepmother, the old Dowager-even though he must recognise in his heart that Beatrix's overweening ambition and worldliness would make them both miserable for the rest of their lives if they did come together. At the reception, however, Beatrix meets the most distinguished nobleman in all Britain, the elderly Duke of Hamilton; and all Henry's hopes are shattered when he hears that she and he have suddenly become betrothed ...
