Laurence Holmes was born in Western Canada. He lived out there in the wilds until he was five years of age and then came to live in Northern Ontario. He came to England for his education, returned to Canada, and studied with Dr. Albert Ham at the Toronto Conservatoire, and then in England with Plunket Greene before going abroad to finish his musical education in Paris. He made his radio debut at Savoy Hill.
