4/7. Architect Edwin Lutyens and garden designer Gertrude Jekyll joined forces to craft a quintessential house-and-garden style in the first part of the 20th century that, arguably, continues to dominate landscaping today. Diarmuid Gavin creates a herbaceous border using Jekyll's ideas about colour and shape, and plants shrubs on either side of a Lutyens-inspired water rill, which leads down to a sunken pool. Meanwhile Jane Owen visits the exuberant garden at Nymans in West Sussex.
