When Lord Mountbatten was blown up aboard his boat on 27 August 1979 while holidaying in the Republic of Ireland, the most complex IRA operation undertaken since the beginning of the Troubles was revealed, Improvements in bomb-making technology enabled massive explosives to be detonated remotely, as the co-ordinated attack on the same day that killed 18 British soldiers also demonstrated.
