Live coverage from the Crucible as this year's final reaches its climax, with a maximum of 11 frames to be played to decide the first champion of the new millennium. The winner will collect not only the famous trophy but also a record prize of £240,000 - a far cry from the original
World Professional Snooker championship in 1927, when Joe Davis 's reward for winning was a princely £6. 50.
In the closing stages last year, Scot Stephen Hendry forged ahead of Welshman Mark Williams to triumph 18-11. That gave Hendry seven titles, a modern-day record that surpassed the six claimed by Ray Reardon and Steve Davis. But this year Hendry went out in the first round, beaten 10-7 in a phenomenal act of giant-killing by world number 92 Stuart Bingham.
