Last July Georg Solti conducted a hand-picked orchestra in a concert at the Victoria Hall in Geneva to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.
Before a distinguished audience, the cream of the world's musicians, chosen from 45 orchestras representing five continents, played a selection of pieces chosen to symbolise the unifying power of music: Rossini's overture William Tell, Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra and the finale to Beethoven's opera Fidelio, for which Britain's London Voices choir supplied the chorus.
