The last in the present series of the music programme searches for the modern-day diva. Defined as a female goddess, the diva for many people is epitomised by Maria Callas. Tonight's programme talks to operatic stars Brigitte Fassbaender, Julia Migines Johnson, Maria Ewing and Dame Joan Sutherland to find out what makes a diva, if she still exists, and whether the concept itself is out of date.
There's also a look at the reasons for the apparent scarcity of black musicians and singers in the classical arena. Opera star Willard White , MP Paul Boateng and co-leader of the English National Opera Edmund Reid talk about the issues of education, culture, prejudice and other problems facing black pupils, and consider possible changes for the future. Peter Maxwell Davies 's 1980 chamber opera is based on the eerie, unsolved mystery surroundingthe Flannan Isle lighthouse off the Scottish coast.
When three ship's officers arrived at Flannan in 1900, they found the lighthouse deserted. Everything was in its place, apart from a chair lying on its back - but the three keepers they had been sent to replace were missing, neverto be found.
Maxwell Davies , who celebrated his
60th birthday last week, introduces this specially filmed production which combines panoramic location shots of Flannan with a claustrophobic lighthouse set. Music Theatre Wales is conducted by Michael Rafferty and stars Philip Creasy , Henry Herford and Kelvin Thomas , who play both the keepers and the officers.
