In 1949 playwright Arthur Miller created Willy Loman, the salesman who clings to the American dream. Thirty-five years later, Miller was invited to Peking to direct his play Death of a Salesman. He was quite prepared for catastrophe. For ten years the Chinese theatre had been closed, the companies arrested or dispersed, and only Mme Mao's 'eight permissible plays' could be staged. How would the actors cope today with a style of drama totally alien to their training and tradition? This film documents a remarkable meeting between two worlds as the Chinese company struggles to come to grips with the Loman family from Brooklyn. With illustrations from previous productions, including the classic Lee J Cobb version and the latest Willy Loman - Dustin Hoffman.
