A six-part series, from source to sea, about China's most violent river - and the cradle of its early civilisation. 2: Beyond the Wall
Throughout the history of China, many races have come to live within its borders. Some settled peacefully along the trade routes. Most, however, were warring tribes posing a constant threat to the unity of the empire. In fact, it was to try to keep them out that the Great Wall was built. Some of these marauding neighbours founded new dynasties like the Mongols and the Manchus, others were absorbed into the great ocean of the Chinese people. Today, many of their descendants still live 'with the Wall', having kept their traditions and religions virtually intact.
