Constance Cummings 1940: Fred Carrick , foreman in an aircraft factory, is worried. Some of his firm's special purpose machinery is in France, in the path of the Nazi advance. In spite of his firm's unconcern, Fred is determined to retrieve the machinery, taking on Fifth Columnists, dive-bombers, refugees, lack of food and petrol, fires and death in the process.

A boy of 14, who could write successfully for a symphony orchestra, a kind of 20th-century Mendelssohn - this was the phenomenon of the young Benjamin Britten , subsequently hailed as the greatest English composer of this century.
This programme traces his brilliant early years from the first piano pieces up to the world success of Peter Grimes , and includes a world premiere of an orchestral work written during Britten's teenage years. with the conductor Simon Rattle the composers Oliver Knussen Colin Matthews and Britten's biographer Donald Mitchell
