The Restoration of St Lawrence, Whitchurch In 1715 the finest French and Italian painters working in England were brought together to create, for the flamboyant Duke of Chandos, a church in the fashionable baroque style. Until three years ago it looked certain that this last glimmer of the Duke's glory was doomed to fade and crumble. But enthusiastic efforts by the parish raised the enormous sum of money needed to restore the whole interior, and a team of specialist restorers from Germany have recently completed the work. Michael Bryant tells the story of this major restoration project. with contributions from
Lady Wedgwood Gillian Weir , Peter Burman the Choir of Christ Church Oxford and the London Early Music Group. Photography

Charles is a sitting target when a tank parks on the latrine and after Mulcahy puts his ear to a shell he finds it hard to hear confession. Potter and Hotlips go out fighting.
