The Children of Peru
In the slums around Lima children starve while Peru exports millions of tons of fish protein to feed our pigs. A large part of Peru's most fertile land is devoted to cash crops-for export. Malnutrition is widespread. Indeed research by a young English girl points to a condition far worse than anyone expected.
The spectacular high Andes are the source of the potato, one of the world's most important food crops. Yet even in Peru potatoes are too scarce and too expensive.
Tonight's Horizon asks why dramatic new discoveries in crops and animal breeding are not helping the families who should benefit, and tells the heartening story of a mountain community who, against all the odds, are determined to help themselves. Narrator PAUL VAUGHAN
