PROFESSOR JOHN YUDKIN argues that 'the dietary cause of heart disease is sugar not fat.' Coronary heart disease has become the biggest killer in the western world. In Britain last year about 200,000 people died of it, many of them men in early middle age.
The reason for the increase in this disease is unknown but many factors are under suspicion including cigarette smoking, lack of exercise and stress. A dominant view among medical scientists is that a major cause is the amount of saturated fat we eat-in meat, milk, butter and cheese.
John Yudkin, Emeritus Professor of Nutrition at London University, disagrees with this widely held view. He believes the killer is sugar.
He argues his case before an invited audience in the Royal Institution, London, against Dr Donald S. Frederickson, President, Institute of Medicine, USA, Dr Peter Taggart, Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, Dr Gilbert Thompson, Royal Postgraduate Medical School
