Debt forces the Lesters, a poor white family in the Deep South, to leave their home. They set off with their possessions for the local poor farm, but on the way meet young Dr. Tim. He gives them a lift back to their own farm and pays six months' rent for them. He buys some seed for them to plant, and the inevitable has been staved off for a little longer.
