Women's Hockey: England v. Ireland
This afternoon the English Women's hockey team will play Ireland at Wembley Stadium, and about any match between these two old 'foes' there is always an air of eager anticipation and excitement.
The first time the two countries met was in 1896, in the days of sweeping long skirts, straw boater hats, and matches played in private (otherwise roughs and toughs broke up the game!). Ever since then, except for the war years, the matches have gone on and Ireland has beaten England only three times - in 1896, 1908, and 1950. Nevertheless these annual matches have always been keen, close, and most spirited affairs.
When the venture to play women's hockey at Wembley Stadium was first made in 1951 it seemed natural, somehow, that Ireland should on that occasion be England's opponent. So before an excited crowd of 30,000 (a record then) England beat the Irish by 6 goals to 1.
This afternoon, the two countries meet again, though the old 'foes' of over sixty years standing will not be battling in private as in the old days, for at Wembley Stadium there will be some 50,000 spectators, and many thousands more watching on television. (Marjorie Pollard)
