In 1911, in the Scottish border village of Sprouston, the young parish minister entered the Daily Mail's competition to find the finest bunch of sweet peas in the country. He could not foretell that the paper's estimate of 15,000 entries would be more than doubled, nor that the existence of the plants he so painstakingly cultivated would be threatened by a nationwide drought.
