Verdi based Don Carlos Schiller's play written 80 years earlier. The many political intricacies of the Spanish court were o simplified for the opera £ libretto, as were the . characters - the Marquis q of Posa, liberal friend of Carlos, is more complete and complex in the play than in the opera.
