AND ORCHESTRA Acts 1, 2 and 3 8.20 Schiller's Posa
Verdi based Don Carlos Schiller's play written 80 years earlier. The many political intricacies of the Spanish court were o simplified for the opera £ libretto, as were the . characters - the Marquis q of Posa, liberal friend of Carlos, is more complete and complex in the play than in the opera.
Nicholas Hytner , who ? successfully produced Schiller's drama at Manchester's Royal
Exchange Theatre, talks with Rodney Milnes above the themes of the play. Producer JOHN BOUNDY (R)
