In 1786, the Cathedral City of Cadiz commissioned Haydn to compose special music for the annual Good Friday service, during which the Bishop preached a short sermon on each of the Seven Sayings of Christ on the Cross. Each sermon was followed by one of Haydn's Sonatas, which complemented musically. the Bishop's meditation.
