Mozart and Don Juan
Dionysian fertility symbol, profligate who gets his just deserts in hell, Promethean tragic hero, Satanic power or Life Force?
Ever since 1630, when the Spanish monk known as Triso de Molina was credited with giving stage life to the already notorious adventures of Don Juan Tenorio (who may or may not have really existed), generations of writers and composers have reacted differently to this archetypal libertine and his fate at the hand of the Stone Guest.
Professor Bernard Wil liams, Provost of King's College. Cambridge, examines Mozart's version, compares it with some others and gives his own interpretation of the Dower of the mvth.
Written in collaboration with F. C. INGLIS
Producer PATRICIA BRENT
(A Scottish Opera performance of Mozart's opera. Don Giovanni , conducted by Sir Alexander Gibson , will be broadcast tomorrow evening live from the King's Theatre, Glasgow)
