Woody Herman talks to PETER CLAYTON about his career as a bandleader, which started nearly 40 years ago when he rose from the ranks of the Isham Jones Band to lead it after Jones retired. He discusses how his music has changed over the years through the various ' Herds particularly with the introduction of electrical instruments. Stravinsky discovered the Herd via records and decided to write a work for it, the Ebony Concerto. A recording of this work, played by the Herd and conducted by the composer, is one of the many records included in the programme.
