2: Art, Suicide and Mourning
Mr Alvarez argues that in the 20th century the role of the serious artist has changed: ' instead of being a Romantic hero and liberator, he has become a victim, a scapegoat.' He relates this to Dr Robert Lifton 's concept of a ' psychic numbness,' which is paralleled and instanced vividly, in some of Wilfred Owen 's poems and letters.
