Lyric tragedy in three acts libretto (after Byron) by FRANCESCO MARIA PIAVE music by VERDI
(sung in Italian)
Written the same year as Ernani, this is among the best of ' Verdi minori ' revealing a vein of gentle and poetic melancholy rare in his work at that time It tells the story of a Venetian Doge, obliged by inflexible state laws to play the Roman father to a son whom he knows to have been unjustly condemned to exile.

A new play by GERT HOFMANN translated from the German and adapted for radio by DONALD WATSON with Sybil Thorndlke
Gert Hofmann. who teaches at Edinburgh University, is one of the most successful of the younger German playwrights. His play Power of Persuasion was produced in London's West End some time ago. The Son deals, in a tragi-comic Vein, with the age-old subject of the returning soldier.

Redeveloping decayed suburbs too often means replacing the cosiness of cottages by the inhumanity of high-rise flats.
At Reporton Road in Fulham, West London, an experimental low-rise housing scheme attempts to re-create the virtues of the traditional street while packing in over 100 people (and their cars) to every acre. NICHOLAS TAYLOR talks to the scheme's architect, HAL HIGGINS. and to a sociologist. SANDRA HILL , who has been sent over from Washington, DC, to report on It.
