Red Arrows

BBC One Wales
BBC One Scotland

A thrilling one-off documentary offers an insight into the recruitment for the RAF's elite formation flying squad. Two places in the team are up for grabs, and cameras follow nine eager pilots as they head to Cyprus to undergo the arduous selection procedure - which, naturally, includes some hair-raising close-formation manoeuvres. Presented by Julia Bradbury.

PICK OF THE DAY RED ARROWS Those daredevils of the sky are looking for new recruits and the selection process is predictably tough

Documentary: Red Arrows 5.00pm BBC1
Any documentary about the brave and resourceful chaps with the impossibly glamorous job of flying in the Red Arrows was bound to fall headfirst into the Top Gun trap, and Red Arrows doesn't disappoint. There's the driving rock soundtrack, courtesy of the Foo Fighters and Green Day among others, and that iconic shot of the lads, in sunglasses and those fetching green one-piece flying suits, strolling across the tarmac to their sexy aircraft.
It's all great fun, of course, and there are some really thrilling moments in this hour-long special, though they all take place in the air with some truly wonderful aerial photography. On the ground, things merely jog along in comparison, as presenter Julia Bradbury breathlessly recounts the tough selection process for the Red Arrows, the RAF's non-combatant, PR-purposes-only shop window.
She follows a handful of hopefuls, all personable pilots with, inevitably, nicknames (Kermit, Duffy, Bollard and so on) as they undergo a series of tests under the watchful eyes of the current Red Arrows. Only two will be successful. Alison Graham
