1/4 As the all-embracing arts strand returns for its eighth series, Alan Yentob follows Welsh actor Wayne Cater and three other Hamlet hopefuls as they prepare for a Shakespeare role that has become a rite of passage for all who have taken it on. With advice and support from ex-Hamlets Ralph Fiennes, Derek Jacobi, David Warner, Jonathan Pryce and Simon Russell Beale.
"The Hobart Shakespeareans" premieres tomorrow on BBC4 at 9pm

ARTS Imagine... 10.45pm BBC1
To Choice, or not to Choice. That is the question. But despite a lack of preview tapes, I decided it was nobler in the mind to go ahead and recommend this latest in a new series based on past form, rather than suffer the slings and arrows of outraged arts lovers.
So, Imagine... is back, fronted as always by Alan Yentob, who tonight presents a look at the role of Hamlet. Why is playing Shakespeare's troubled young prince such a big deal in the theatrical world? Is there some kind of rite of passage involved in moping around Elsinore, visualising your dead dad as a ghost and making plans to kill your uncle?
Contributors include former Hamlets Derek Jacobi, Ralph Fiennes, Jonathan Pryce, David Warner and Simon Russell Beale. The programme also follows four actors already playing Hamlet from rehearsals through to final performance, including young Ed Stoppard on stage in London. (Alison Graham)
