Hetty Wainthropp Investigates
9.30pm, BBC 1: At 60, Hetty Wainthropp decides that it's time she did something useful with her life. "Hetty likes things to add up," observes her husband Robert (Derek Benfield) ruefully, as his wife turns her natural flair for snooping into a career as a private investigator, digging up trouble in the small northern town where she resides. Before long she's got a murder on her hands, a faithful sidekick to assist her and a villain on her trail. Patricia Routledge is in energetic form as this modern Miss Marple, relishing the chance to play a character of greater subtlety than Hyacinth Bucket. Read more about new drama for winter in a seasonal special starting on page 29.
