David Attenborough
I describes it as "the most spectacular rush hour in nature". These are the chinstrap penguins, thousand upon thousand, waddling along the beaches, across glacial torrents and up near-vertical cliffs to feed their chicks.
Summer is short, and the next generation must be independent before winter.
On the beaches of South
Georgia, bull seals fight furiously forterritory. Further south, in 24-hour daylight, the thaw is underway, and icebergs the size of cathedrals begin to disintegrate and splinter into the sea. The fresh water thus released stimulates the sparse vegetation and awakens the tiny orange mites, the size of a pin head but nevertheless the largest land-based predator on the continent.
By February most of the winter ice has gone. As the sea routes open briefly it is time for the adelie penguins to feed their young, for the first storms of the next winter are not far away. Producer Alastair Fothergill
