Last in the series in which general practitioner Dr Martin Hughes examines some common medical problems and follows patients as they seek treatment. Firemen in Britain are not permitted to wear spectacles or contact lenses. Their eyesight has to be perfect - and, of course, has to remain so. When fireman David Drain discovered that he had become short-sighted he knew that his job was on the line. One consequence of being out of work was that his family faced the prospect of losing their
Suffolk home, because he would no longer be able to pay the mortgage. Then he heard about new laser surgery that might be able to correct his sight. He would have to borrow cash for a private operation and there was always a risk that it would not work. But for David there was no choice. He decided that he had to take the chance.
