Once again marathon fever grips the capital city and for a few hours the roar of the traffic is replaced by the sound of thousands of feet making the now classic journey from Greenwich Park to Westminster Bridge.
In its seventh year, the appeal of the 26 mile, 385 yard run shows no signs of diminishing. A record entry of nearly 28,000, from a total of 76,699 applications, means that this year's event will again be the biggest marathon in the world.
Among the competitors are serious athletes like
HUGH JONES and CHARLIE SPEDDING , both previous winners, and Norway's INGRID KRISTIANSEN , who could become the first woman to finish a marathon inside two hours 20 minutes. But as well, there are the fun runners, the men and women whose achievement will be merely finishing the course and raising thousands of pounds for charity.
