Once again marathon fever grips the capital city and for a few hours the roar of the traffic is replaced by the sound of thousands of feet making the now classic journey from Greenwich Park to Westminster Bridge.
In its seventh year, the appeal of the 26 mile, 385 yard run shows no signs of diminishing. A record entry of nearly 28,000, from a total of 76,699 applications, means that this year's event will again be the biggest marathon in the world.
Among the competitors are serious athletes like
HUGH JONES and CHARLIE SPEDDING , both previous winners, and Norway's INGRID KRISTIANSEN , who could become the first woman to finish a marathon inside two hours 20 minutes. But as well, there are the fun runners, the men and women whose achievement will be merely finishing the course and raising thousands of pounds for charity.
Live coverage of the whole race with commentary by DAVID COLEMAN. RON PICKERING and BRENDAN FOSTER , and additional reporting by STUART STOREY. BOB WILSON and KEVIN COSGROVE

Highlights of today's epic journey through the streets of London. The story of how the 26-mile race was won and lost by the more serious competitors, and of the heart-warming efforts by thousands of ordinary athletes, whose goal was just to complete the course.
with Desmond Morris and Sarah Kennedy
Which single fish has been sold for over £140,000? Which horse became a best-selling animal sculpture? What's the Dalai Llama's favourite dog? Each week Desmond and Sarah explore the relationship between people and the animals in their lives. Today, in the heartland of the Potteries, Sarah meets an agony aunt for cats and talks to the boy who has become surrogate 'dad' to a family of owls. Desmond reports on dogs of war, dogs of religion and dogs that can run from Brighton to London in a day.
